Pope Francis was a much loved Pope. When I first saw his chart, I thought, how perfect for a Pope. He has Sun in Sagittarius conjunct Jupiter in Capricorn. Sagittarius is the sign that rules higher education, the law, religion, philosophy and foreign travel. It is also an optimistic sign. Jupiter is the ruler of Sagittarius, so when you see Sun in Sagittarius, also conjunct Jupiter, this serves to emphasize the above traits. He combined a deep faith, with travel around the world to visit the faithful, often in far flung places and in war torn regions such as Syria. He studied philosophy and taught literature and psychology. The Pope spoke 7 or 8 languages.

The Sun in Sagittarius is conjunct the North Node. He was meant for a leadership role. The Sun, Jupiter, North Node and Ceres are all placed in the  6th house of service. Pope Francis, more than any other Pope I can remember, lived out that role, serving the poor, the disabled, the immigrants and all those others in need of God's love.

With Moon conjunct Venus in Aquarius in the 7th house, he truly loved the people. Aquarius is taken to be the sign of the people. He was a benevolent servant, eschewing the pomp and pageantry of his predecessor. He lived not in the Vatican's Apostolic Palace but in a guest house nearby. Those with Aquarius strong in their charts are not afraid to be different. He was spoken of as an agent for change.

Francis was one of the most progressive Popes in history.  Uranus on the MC is often free thinking.  He welcomed gays into the Church. There were many firsts for him. First to take the name Francis, after the Saint, first Pope from Latin America, first Jesuit Pope.  First to appoint a Cardinal in Mongolia.

He was also known to be extraordinarily kind. He truly nurtured his flock. (Cancer rising) He called up the leader of a small Christian church in Gaza during the ongoing war to check on how they were doing until 2 days before he died.

When he was elected Pope on March 13, 2013 his progressed Moon had just entered Sagittarius. His Solar Arc Moon was 29 Aries, conjunct his Midheaven at 0 Taurus. Solar Arc Venus was trine his Sun and North Node. Pluto was conjunct his Mercury Descendant by transit.

He was humble. When elected to the papacy, and asked to accept, he responded, "Although I am a sinner, I accept."

I saw him perform an outdoor Mass at Catholic University on the steps of the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in September of 2015.  He was sick that day, but he kept to his schedule. He really was an amazing human being.  And much beloved.
